Cairns Coast to Townsville — C2T2 and Islands
Heading south out of Cairns opens up a world of islands basking in the tropical sun off the striking Queensland coast. This Destination is packed full of stunners, from the lovely golden sands of Mission Beach to the bustle of Townsville, and features the lushly forested Dunk Island, the mangrove channels and boulder strewn beaches of Hinchinbrook Island, and of course – Maggie, as Magnetic Island is lovingly known.
But first… Fitzroy Island, just a quick boat ride around the headland from Cairns. Fitzroy Island National Park covers more than 95% of the island. The island features dazzling beaches – of which the totally photogenic Nudey Beach is a hot favorite – and walking tracks that crisscross the island which lead to elevated viewpoints which reveal sublime views as far as the eye can see. Back on the mainland, Mission Beach is surrounded by rainforest which is part of the Wet Tropics of Queensland World Heritage Area. Just a few miles offshore lies Dunk Island, the largest island of the Family Islands, part of both the Family Islands National Park and included in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. Just about 20 miles or so south of Dunk Island lies Hinchinbrook Island, one of Australia’s largest National Parks and also a Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Island whose shores are lined with dense mangrove forests. Finally, it’s on to Townsville and the mesmerizing charms of Magnetic Island’s many picturesque bays, granite headlands and golden beaches, over half of which is National Park, also within the GBR World Heritage Area.
