Fiji’s Northern Nirvana — Vanua Levu and Taveuni
A veritable galaxy away from the ritz and glitz of the Mamanucas and Denarau Island, the northern reaches of this island nation are all about getting back to nature, attested to in all their tropical glory by the wet, wild and wondrous “Garden Isle” of Taveuni and the ridged, sinuous island of Vanua Levu. Just a stone’s throw east of Taveuni lies the smaller, but spectacular island of Qamea showcasing verdant rainforest and sandy beaches, and together this trifecta makes up the featured islands in this Destination.
Getting to these remote islands is in itself the essence of the adventure. Vanua Levu is Fiji’s second largest island on the south coast of which is located the major town of Savusavu, and its stunning protected harbor which attracts yachties from the world over. East of Savusavu and fringing the south coast of Vanua Levu, a gorgeous barrier reef creates a stunning foreground to the mountainous island, especially as seen from the air. Just a few miles east of Vanua Levu across the Somosomo strait lies Fiji’s “Garden Isle” of Taveuni, a natural nirvana, blessed with bountiful rainfall and rich volcanic soil, both of which support an abundance of flora for which the island is famous. Nature reigns supreme here – the Lavena Coastal Walk which traverses the Bouma National Heritage Park all the way to the spectacle of Wainibau Falls is a highlight of Taveuni. The antimeridian, 180⁰ east or west passes through the heart of Taveuni and also through the northeastern tip of Vanua Levu, where one half of you could be in Sunday and the other half in Monday at the same time.
